If there’s one car that makes Mercedes enthusiasts stop in their tracks, it’s the 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth. It may look like a clean and elegant compact sedan – but underneath it’s one of the most legendary performance Mercedes models of the 1980s.

🔎 Why it’s special
Mercedes developed the 190E 2.3-16 as a homologation model for touring car racing. The subtle body kit, rear spoiler and lowered stance hint that this was far more than an ordinary 190E.

🧠 For the nerds
The engine features a Cosworth-designed 16-valve cylinder head mounted on Mercedes’ 2.3-litre M102 engine, producing around 185 hp and revving much higher than the standard models.

It also received a Getrag dogleg 5-speed gearbox, upgraded suspension and improved aerodynamics. The model gained worldwide fame during the 1984 Nürburgring Race of Champions, where a young Ayrton Senna beat a grid full of Formula 1 legends driving identical 190E 2.3-16 cars.
